RISK FACTORS

As you learned in the earlier sections, testosterone production and regulation is a complex business. With any this complicated, any problems or interruptions along the system can lead to lower than optimal testosterone levels in men. If there are diseases or negative conditions involving the male testes, hypothalamus, pituitary gland or genetic material, the resulting state is called hypogonadism.

Risks factors for developing low testosterone include:
  • Aging
  • Chronic pain syndrome and treatment with opiates
  • Corticosteroid use
  • Radical prostatectomy
  • Usage of opiates or corticosteroids

NORMAL AGING & SYMPTOMS

At this point you're probably saying to yourself: "Aren't these all just signs of aging?" and to some degree you are correct. None of the above signs or symptoms are specific to low testosterone and many are hard to differentiate from the normal "getting older" experience.

This is where finding the right doctor matters. We say this all the time, but don't try and diagnose yourself. A good doctor will be to evaluate any signs or symptoms of low testosterone, and then to see how they correlate with your hormone levels. A doctor is also going to be able to understand that Illnesses such as depression and hypothyroidism can show similar symptoms, something you as an individual cannot.

Take our two minute symptom quiz if you want to see whether it is time to make an appoint with a physician. Like any quiz and medical conditions, don't overthink it. Take the quick test and if it looks like you should see a doctor, then make an appointment. The quiz is no replacement for an expert opinion and the quiz won't tell you whether you are just aging normally or you have a major problem.
